To work in Spain as a highly-skilled employee, non-EU citizens need to find a job which is listed as a ‘Shortage Occupation’. This is a job for which there is a lack of suitable candidates within the EU. The employer must then request a Work Visa from the Ministry of Labour. To work as a freelancer, candidates need to apply at a Spanish consulate or embassy. These work visas are valid for one year but can be renewed if all the conditions continue to be met.
The HSBC Expat Explorer Survey ranked Spain as the 14th best country in the world to work as an expat, ahead of France, Italy and the UK. The same survey found Spain to have the highest quality of life in Europe. This is often attributed to the better cost of living, rent, and climate. The working culture in Spain revolves around the siesta, a 2-3 hour break within every working day.
