Eursap’s SAP Tip of the week: Utilizing the power of SAP HANA for full enterprise searches

The SAP HANA database has unprecedented power when it comes to searching for specific entries. This is enabled in many ways in S/4HANA, but a really useful way is by using the transaction SE16SL.

This transaction will search for any value you like in all tables in the entire system.

Example: need to know which tables contain entries for a specific material number?

You can use SE16SL for this.

See below – add some text in the “Purpose of the search”, then add a description of the field you want to check for. In the example below, the word “Material” has been used – SAP will search for “*Material*” so all fields with the occurrence of that word will be searched. Additional searches can be performed by hitting the + button and adding more parameters.

The search can take a few minutes, but eventually you will see the results output to screen.

From the output, you can navigate to:

The definition of the table in the ABAP dictionary by selecting the Table Name

The specific table entries for the value specified by selecting “Hits”

The description of the field used in the search for that specific table, by selecting “Entities”

The number of entries for each field searched by hitting “SE16H”

I hope you find this useful! Stay tuned for another SAP Tip from Eursap next week!
